Windber Scores Early, Downs Springfield (Montco)

Windber came into the game hailed as one of the best balanced teams of the 40s with an awesome defense and a relentless ground attack. But Nunzio Marino showed he could wing the ball with the best of the 70s as he passed for an amazing 71% completion rate and mixing it up with five different receivers hauling in his aerials. Most of the passes were short range, ball-control efforts.

The game plan for Springfield was to shut down the run, but Windber was able to use their running game to control the clock with 36 total rushes. The Rambler running game set up several scores including three field goals for Pete Kaplan. Springfield had problems all day long with the Windber defense.

Springfield also had their share of heroes with defensive producing three sacks and one INT.   Paul Melzer (5-9, 168) got the call to carry the ground attack for Springfield , carrying the ball 16 times for a hard-earned 36 yards.  Gary Henderson threw for two TDs, both short range as the heralded Windber defense made play after play.
