RED RAIDERS RUN AWAY FROM VIKINGS at Senior Night
Paul Sarpen 10.21.05- Zimmerman Stadium

What started as a competitive game at the end of the first quarter, and early in the third quarter- became a "Red Raider Runaway" for Coatesville (6-2, 2-2 Ches-Mont) over West Chester East (3-5, 2-2), 56-21.  The win tonight helps Coatesville keep its slim District 1 playoff hopes alive.

The game started out with a Coatesville miscue, as Khali Brewer fumbled the opening kickoff, which got recovered by Tom Dean, and returned to the 1 yard line.  Shawn Brown pounded it in from the 1 yard line, for a 7-0 Viking edge.  It went back and forth in the first quarter, as both teams traded touchdowns, Coatesville tying it on 7-7 on a Clinton Gray 11 yard run.  The Vikings took a 13-7 lead on a 65 yard slant pass.  The lead was short lived, as Coatesville took a 14-13 lead on a long drive, capping it off on Marquis Alston's 6 yard run.

Coatesville pulled away temporarily, with two second quarter touchdown runs by Alston and Josh Favinger, to take a 28-13 advantage into the lockerroom at halftime.  East started the second half kickoff, and drove the length of the field (aided by some crucial Coatesville penalties), and scored on another Maldonado touchdown catch, 5 yards this time- to close the game to 28-21.

The Red Raiders swelled the lead back to 14, on CJ Gray's second touchdown.  But it was not CJ Gray who put the nail in the Viking coffin, but Coatesville's defense.  Linebacker Chris DiMassa returned a fumbled pitch 91 yards for a touchdown, making the lead 42-21.  After this, it was all Coatesville.  Marquis Alston added his third touchdown run of the night, and backup quarterback Wilkins added a 1 yard run to close out the scoring.

As a whole, this game was a bit more one sided then everything indicated.  Coatesville committed 13 penalties for 105 yards, many of them on crucial 3rd and long situations.  The Red Raiders amassed 498 total yards (436 rushing), 27 first downs, and held the Vikings to 312 total yards.  West Chester East had some golden scoring opportunities, as Joe Barza missed a makeable field goal, and an extra point, and the fumble DiMassa returned for a touchdown.

Coatesville will play West Chester Henderson next week, and West Chester East travels to Downingtown East.

GAME NOTES-
