SECOND HALF SURGE PROPELS COUGARS PAST RAIDERS, 34-20
10.14.05- Coatesville Area Multi Purpose Stadium- Paul Sarpen

Last night a homecoming crowd of 7,500 at Coatesville Area Multi Purpose Stadium went home disappointed, as the hometown Red Raiders of Coatesville dropped a 34-20 decision to the Downingtown East Cougars.  The Cougar win exacted a bit of revenge over Coatesville, as Downingtown East lost to Coatesville 10-0 last season- then the Red Raiders proceeded to spit all over Kottmeyer Stadium.  You can say Coatesville got what they deserved, as the loss all but ended their playoff hopes for this season, due to a weak non-conference schedule.  The only hope for Coatesville for a repeat Ches-Mont League championship, is to beat West Chester Henderson (4-3, 2-0 Ches-Mont), and hope that the Warriors beat Downingtown East on November 4th.  If all of this happens, the Cougars, Red Raiders, and Warriors, will share the Ches-Mont League title.

There were numerous splendid performances on both sides.  Pat Devlin threw for 305 yards and 3 touchdowns, 2 of his receivers (Richie Walls and Justin Blye) had over 100 yards receiving, Sean Fitzgerald returned a interception 70 yards for a touchdown.  Richie Walls had 228 all-purpose yards.  For Coatesville, Chris DiMassa had a standout game on defense, and caught a touchdown on offense.  Mike Maxwell had 134 yards receiving for Coatesville.  Unfortunately for Coatesville, star running back Clinton (CJ) Gray ran for only 83 yards, the first time this year he was held under 130 yards.  It is also the first time since last year's Downingtown East-Coatesville matchup that he was held under the century mark rushing.

Coatesville struck first blood, taking a 6-0 lead on a 47 yard wide receiver pass from Mike Jamison to Mike Maxwell.  Laura O'Malley's kick was blocked, for the 6-0 edge.  Downingtown East took a 7-6 lead early in the second quarter on a 16 yard pass from Pat Devlin to Willy Davis.  Coatesville punted on their next possession, and the Cougars scored right away on a 71 yard screen pass from Pat Devlin to Richie Walls, the third successul screen pass to Walls, all three went for 20 yards or more.  Pat O'Connor's kick was blocked, but the Cougars were up 13-6.  Coatesville tied the score on a 53 yard touchdown pass from Scott A'Hara to Chris DiMassa, this time O'Malley's kick was good to tie the score at 13.

I feel the extended halftime due to Homecoming Ceremonies, flattened the Red Raiders in the second half.  They struggled to move the ball until their final touchdown drive.  Downingtown East started the second half with the ball and drove down the field to score a touchdown for a 20-13 advantage.  The Cougars converted 3 times on fourth down and short yardage on the drive, which culminated in a 1 yard Pat Devlin plunge.  The Cougars scored again after a Coatesville punt, on an amazing one-handed touchdown catch on the part of Justin Blye on the first drive of the final stanza.

Coatesville tried to come back like gangbusters, but it was not made to be quite yet.  Red Raider quarterback Scott A'Hara fumbled a shotgun snap, and tried to throw deep.  Defensive back Sean Fitzgerald jumped the route, and returned the interception 70 yards for a touchdown, swelling the Cougar advantage to 34-13.  Coatesville scored their only second half touchdown on a 10 yard pass from A'Hara to Maxwell, to close out the scoring.

Up next for Downingtown East (6-1, 2-0) is their Homecoming against Bishop Shanahan (1-5, 0-3).  For Coatesville (5-2, 1-1), it will be a road trip to West Chester East (2-4, 1-1).  The Vikings' game @ Downingtown West was postponed to Monday night @ 6pm.
