BETHLEHEM
– BASD Stadium was officially
renamed “Frank Banko Field” last night before the
game. Banko is a 1937 graduate from
Liberty
who donated $600,000 toward the new stadium turf project.
Liberty
quarterback Dan Persa led the Hurricanes in a win over
Parkland
26-0 in a Lehigh Valley
Conference showdown. The Hurricanes improved to 4-0 and 2-0 in the LVC. They
just wore down a tough
Parkland
team.
The first half
started slow. The Hurricanes would not get on the board until the second
quarter when Persa went right and darted 28-yards for the first score of the
game with
9:06
to go in the half.
The extra point was good by Jon Mill and the Hurricanes led 7-0.
The Hurricanes would strike again in the quarter when Persa hit a wide open
Andrew Lee for a 62-yard bomb. After a penalty
pushing back the Hurricanes on the extra point the kick went wide right and
the Hurricanes led 13-0.
The Hurricanes’ defense stopped
Parkland
and forced them to punt the ball.
Persa would kneel down with 5 seconds to go in the half
and the Hurricanes went in to the half
with a 13-0 lead.
The Hurricanes opened the third quarter with another Persa touchdown pass when
he hit Ray Olivo for a 27-yard touchdown with
6:22
to go in the third quarter. Persa’s two-point
conversion to Olivo failed and
Liberty
added to their lead 19-0.
The Hurricanes’ defense swarmed the Trojans
all
night and held them to under 100 yards total
offense. The Trojans only had 6 first downs in the entire game.
Persa would lead the Hurricanes for one more touchdown in the fourth quarter
when he threw his third touchdown of the night hitting Richard
Jarnagin for a 30-yard touchdown pass. The extra
point was good and the Hurricanes’ rout was on 26-0 with
11:04
to go in the game.
The game ended with a convincing win by the Hurricanes last night. Persa led
the way with 190 yards passing and three touchdowns. He
also
had 50 yards rushing and one touchdown run. Even more impressive was their
defense forcing another shut out and holding the Trojans offense under 100
yards total
offense.
The Hurricanes travel next week to face Allentown Central
Catholic.
Parkland
will host Easton Area next Friday night.
