MOUNT CARMEL – This game was another chapter in a great rivalry at the Silver Bowl. This game was a tail of two stories with Mount Carmel building a 21-6 lead through three quarters. Then the defending three-time State Champs showed why they are a championship program by exploding for 26 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to preserve a hard fought 32-21 victory over the Red Tornadoes.

Going into the game you could say this is a must win for both programs if they want to make the playoffs. The biggest question going into the game was can the Tigers secondary handle the Red Tornadoes passing game? Would Hynoski and company wear down
Mount Carmel on this humid night. With all this the stage was now set for a playoff atmosphere in front of a huge crowd at the Silver Bowl.

The Tigers started the game a little shaky with two turnovers in the first quarter.
Tom Admire of Southern Columbia would make a big play on an interception from Marcus Wasilewski of Mount Carmel. The interception gave the Tigers a first down on the 42 yard line of the Red Tornadoes. The Tigers were driving for the first score of the game when they fumbled the ball on the eight-yard line that was recovered by Dave Pellowski of Mount Carmel. The Red Tornadoes would drive right down the field when freshman quarterback Wasilewski hit Dave Langton for a four-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was good and Mount Carmel led 7-0 with 37.7 seconds to go in the first quarter. The game would be delayed after the score do to lightening and thunder for 45 minutes.

After the long delay Henry Hynoski would get the Tigers on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run. Phil Scicchitano of
Mount Carmel blocked the extra point and the Red Tornadoes would cling to a 7-6 lead. Wasilewski led the Red Tornadoes right down the field and answered right back with a nice pass to Langton for a 33- yard touchdown. With 7:19 to go in the half Marcus Kufta kicked the extra point giving the Red Tornadoes a 14-6 lead. There would be no more scoring in the first half.

The second h
alf for Mount Carmel started like the first half when Wasilewski hit Langton for a long 65-yard touchdown pass with 10:22 to go in the third quarter giving the Red Tornadoes a commanding 21-6 lead in front of a loud home crowd.

The turning point of the game for the Tigers came late in the third quarter on a fumble recovery with
2:48 to go in the third quarter. The Tigers would start that drive on the 21 yard line and Nick Gallinot would go in for the score on an 8-yard touchdown run with 11:30 to go in the game. The two-point conversion failed and the Red Tornadoes lead was cut to 21-12. This turning point would ignite a 26 point burst by the Tigers. The lack of a running game late by the Red Tornadoes hurt them late in the game. The Tigers big offensive line wore down the Red Tornadoes on this hot humid night.

The fourth quarter was
all Southern. Connagham would get his second touchdown of the quarter when he streaked eight yards for the touchdown run. The touchdown was setup by a big punt return. The Red Tornadoes were holding onto a narrow 21-19 lead. The Tigers defense stepped up in the quarter again forcing Wasilewski to make some bad decisions late in the game. Wasilewski threw one of his two interceptions in the fourth quarter.

Tom Admire would intercept the ball giving the Tigers a first down. Connagham would take the ball and dart for a five-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion failed and the Tigers had their first lead of the night 25-21. The Tigers then stopped the Red Tornadoes on fourth down on an interception by Wasilewski. Mount Carmel got an unsportsmenlike penalty giving the Tigers a first down on the 29 yard line. It took one running play by Hynoski who galloped 29 yards for the final score.

Hynoski would finish the game with 249 yards rushing. The extra point that was the fin
al score of the game capped an incredible fourth quarter comeback by the Tigers. The final score was Southern Columbia 32 and Mount Carmel 21.

Southern Columbia 2-1 hosts Lewisburg next Friday night. Mount Carmel 2-1 goes on the road to play a tough Shamokin team.

On a side note: This was a hard fought game by both teams. What happened after the game re
ally sickens me. Personal belongings were stolen from both teams. Someone broke into both locker rooms and took wallets, car keys, cell phones and other items belonging to Southern Columbia and Mount Carmel football players.. If anyone knows anything about this please contact your local police. YOU know who you are and please give back what you took!!
