Berwick @ Hazleton Area
(Friday, February 4th, WK 10)
Hazleton Area knocks off Berwick
By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com
The Berwick Bulldogs traveled to Harman Geist Memorial Field Friday night looking for a win against the Hazleton Area Cougars to advance to the D2/11 AAA playoffs. The Cougars came in the game 8-1 with their only loss of the season coming to Abington Heights in week 1. Berwick on the other hand came in 7-2 with losses to Wyoming Area and quad A power Bishop McDevitt. When it was all said and done the Cougars walked away with a 9-8 win in front of a capacity crowd.
Berwick would come in with the roster trimmed once again and Sr. Brant Quick would start the Dawgs' first series at QB. Sr. Tristan DiPippa did see action at the QB position also, but was injured during the game and out for the 2nd half.
Hazleton Area would score first on a 11 play drive going 67 yards, capped off by Sr. QB Nate Staruch on a 3 yard keeper. The PAT was no good, with the score Cougars 6 Dawgs 0.
The Cougars would have a lot of long drives during the night, consuming much of the clock. But penalties seemed to keep stalling their drives. Hazleton Area really didn't play a great game tonight, but they did get it done on the scoreboard and that's were it counts.
Berwick would tie the score in the 2nd half on a 85 yard TD reception by So. WR Gordan Law. Quick ran out from the QB position as he was going to run the end-around, then pulled up and hit Law who was wide open. From there it was off to the races and there would be no catching Law. Berwick would miss the XP, although they did get it the first time. But a penalty backed them up and the PAT was missed on the second try, that would be huge later in the game.
The game would stay knotted at 6 into the 4th quarter. Hazleton Area would break the tie on a 33 yard field goal with 4:29 left in the game, with the score Cougars 9 Dawgs 6.
Berwick would get into Hazleton Area territory on their next possession, with Quick reeling off a 41 yard run to the Cougars' 38 yard line. The Berwick drive would stall 4 plays later on a Hazleton Area interception. The clock was ticking down and Berwick's playoff hopes were slowly coming to an end. More importantly both DiPippa and now Quick were on the sideline, Quick had to actually crawl off the field due to an ankle injury.
The Dawgs would pin Hazleton Area deep on the next series, hoping to block a punt or get good field position. Hazleton Area head coach Rocco Petrone decided to have his punter take the safety from the 8 yard line instead of chancing a blocked punt or a good return. If Berwick had not of gotten a penalty on that made PAT in the 3rd quarter, Petrone would not of had the option to take a safety. The score was now Cougars 9 Dawgs 8 with 1:28 left in the game.
Berwick would finish the game with Sr. Ryan Firth at QB with Quick now sidelined. Hazleton Area would not let Berwick get much going and time ticked away on the Bulldogs' season, with the final score Cougars 9 Dawgs 8.
Hazleton Area will now move on to the D2/11 AAAA playoffs. Berwick on the other hand may have qualified for an Eastern Conference bid, but don't expect to see the Dawgs go Eastern Conference, they are so beat up and the roster is so thin it wouldn't be sensible.
