Bishop McDevitt @ Berwick
(Sunday, October 9th, Week 6)
Crusaders top Dawgs
By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com
The scene at Crispin Memorial Field Sunday night was a taste of years back for some Berwick fans. You could feel the excitement in the air and crowds of people flooded Mulberry St. outside the Bulldog Lounge, otherwise known as the Villa Capri. They all came to see the Berwick Bulldogs, one of Pennsylvania's most historic football programs take on one of the best quad A schools the state has to offer, in the Bishop McDevitt Crusaders, ranked 8th in the nation by the USA Today. When it was all said and done, McDevitt proved themselves with a 28-14 win in Dawgtown.
McDevitt took a 7-0 lead with 5:03 left in the 1st quarter on a 5 play drive that covered 57 yards. The Drive was capped by a 24 yard strike from Sr. QB Jeremy Ricker. Ricker a D1 prospect will be attending the University of Maryland after finishing his career with the Crusaders and after getting a good look at him tonight, should certainly make a impact with the Terrapins.
Berwick tied things up with :53 seconds left in the 1st quarter when Sr. RB Dalen Broussard scored on a 6 yard dash. Three plays earlier McDevitt had a bad snap on a punt, which the Dawgs recovered at the Crusaders 9 yard line. Momentum was swinging Berwick's way with the TD from Broussard, but the entire night was an emotional roller coaster and McDevitt ended up enjoying the ride the most.
The Dawgs saw the lead for the first time, when Sr. QB Mike Walton connected with So. WR Gordon Law on 20 TD strike with 3:22 left in the 2nd quarter, with the score Dawgs 14 McDevitt 7.
Berwick's lead was short lived, as McDevitt answered right back on their very next play from scrimmage, a 56 yard rush to paydirt by So. RB Mike Jones. The score would be tied at 14 and both teams would head to the locker room feeling pretty good about themselves.
The 2nd half, which is usually Berwick's best half of football, turned out to be the exact opposite on this night as the Dawgs were outscored 14-0.
McDevitt would get TD's from Sr. Dave Seiple on a 32 yard scamper and Ricker on a 1 yard keeper to salt the win away, with the final score Crusaders 28 Dawgs 14.
After the game Berwick head coach George Curry noted that he thought his team was better then what they showed and that winning out the rest of the games on their schedule is imperative in making the playoffs.
If your a Berwick fan and your looking for a bright side to this story, D11 Pottsville also suffered a tough loss this evening. Muhlenburg upended the Tide 34-14, which does help the Dawgs out if your looking at playoff points race.
