Selinsgrove @ Berwick

(Friday, September 30th, WK2)

Berwick hands Selinsgrove first loss in 40-0 shutout

By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

Brant Quick helped the Berwick Bulldogs improve their record to 4-1, rushing for 153 yards on 27 carries with 3 Td's at Crispin Memorial Field Friday night. The Selinsgrove Seals would come in 4-0, with the game setting up to be Berwick's biggest test since their home opener against Wyoming Area. The Dawgs scored early, taking a 15-0 lead just 5:74 into the 1st quarter and never let up, with the final score Dawgs 40 Seals 0.

Berwick Sr. Mike Walton would get the start at QB, rushing 67 yards on 11 carries with 1 TD. Walton also completed 6 passes on 10 attempts for 82 yards, one of them a 10 yard TD strike to Sr. TE Eric Roth.

The Dawgs would score on their first drive of the night, going 43 yards on 8 plays, capped by Quick on a 15 yard dash. Berwick would then go for the 2 point conversion after a Seals penalty. Quick would take it in from the goaline and Berwick led 8-0 with 8:21 left in the 1st quarter.

Selinsgrove would fumble the ensuing kickoff and the Dawgs would recover the ball at the Seals 27 yard line. Sr. Dalen Broussard looked to be the guy that stripped the ball away, giving the Dawgs another great opportunity to strike paydirt. Quick got Berwick down to the 12 yard line on 2 plays. Sr. Tristan DiPippa would then get it to the 5 on a 7 yard scamper. Walton then capped the 4 play drive on a QB keeper and the Dawgs had the quick 15-0 lead.

Berwick tacked one more on before the half when Quick scored his second of the night on a 10 yard dash to paydirt. The Dawgs would head to the locker room up 22-0, with Selinsgrove looking for an answer.

DiPippa started the scoring for the Dawgs in the 2nd half, capping a 74 yard drive on a 35 yard scamper. Berwick was now up 28-0 and on the way to their 4th win of the season.

Quick would get his third and final TD of the night with 5:55 left in the 3rd quarter on a 1 yarder, capping a 55 yard drive on 6 plays.

The Berwick defense looked like the "D" of past Berwick champions tonight, not giving much at all. It seemed like Sr. DB Pete Celona was in on just about every play, earning him the defensive player of the game by berwickdawgs.com.

"I felt like I didn't have that good of a game last week, it was time to step it up and hit everyone I could. The "D" overall tackled really good tonight, said Celona.

So next week comes the one that Berwick fans have been waiting for since last season. Nationally ranked McDevitt rolls into town Friday night. There will be national TV coverage, live bands and yes, some strap it on and come at ya football. If you a high school football fan, this is a must see game.

McDevitt will be minus their star running back, LaSean McCoy who broke his ankle last week in a win against Harrisburg. Don't expect McCoy being out to slow down McDevitt, this team is loaded.

"They have 10 division 1 prospects on their squad, come next Friday 9 of them will be playing, we better be ready for a battle," said Berwick head coach George Curry in his post game interview.
