Berwick @ Pittston Area
(Friday, September 23rd, WK 4)

Dawgs back on track, steamroll Pats 57-13

By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

The Pittston Area Patriots ran into the Berwick Bulldogs Friday night in Yatesville after a loss. If you going to play the Dawgs you surely don't want it to be after a tough loss, tonight's game was a prime example of that fact. The Dawgs jumped out to a 22-0 lead only 4:46 into the game and never looked back.

A Pittston Area fumble on their first possession set the Dawgs up at the Pats 37 yard line. From their it took Berwick 5 plays to cross the goal line, with Sr. RB Brant Quick leading the way and Sr. RB Dalen Broussard capping the drive on a 6 yard run.

The Patriots would punt on their next series and Berwick would again score, this time Quick broke off a 46 yard rush on the second play of the drive down to the PA 21 yard line. A 15 yard penalty was tacked on to the end of the run and the Dawgs were set up at the Pats 6 yard line. Quick took it in from their on a 6 yard TD rush. There was still 7:42 left in the first quarter and Berwick held a 15-0 lead after the 2-point conversion was made by Broussard on a 2 yard run after another PA penalty.

Pittston Area again shot themselves in the foot on their very next possession with another fumble, recovered by the Dawg's So. DL Derek Bower. Berwick was once again set up deep in Patriot's territory. Sr. TE Eric Roth hauled in a 31 yard TD pass from Sr. QB Tristan DiPippa two plays later, with the score Dawgs 22 Pats 0.

The Patriots manage to get on the board late in the 1st quarter on a 6 yard TD reception by Jr. TE Kirk Jones from Sr. QB Jack Stankoski. Stankoski a few plays earlier broke off a QB keeper for 46 yards to set the Pats up at the Berwick 4 yard line. The pat was missed with the score Dawgs 22 Pats 6, mind you we were still in the 1st quarter!

Berwick would add one more TD with time winding down in the 1st quarter on a 26 yard TD scamper by Quick. The 1st quarter would finally come to an end after 35 combined points were scored, 29 of them by the Dawgs.

Berwick would use many of their second team in the 2nd quarter and Sr. QB Mike Walton would get plenty of action under center. Walton looked very impressive running the ball and throwing the ball. Berwick's offense really did not miss a beat with Walton at QB, but of course the game was in control and running out the clock was the main objective for the Dawgs "O".

DiPippa would intercept a pass and return it 48 yards for the TD and put the Dawgs up 36-6 with 9:19 left in the 1st half.

DiPippa also got a chance to play the running back position with Walton at QB and made the best of it, breaking one 17 yards for another Berwick TD. Berwick was now up 43-6 and in all honesty this one was over.

The Dawgs would score twice more in the 2nd half, one a 66 yard scamper to paydirt by Sr. RB Josh Walsh, the other a 13 yard QB keeper by So. QB Gordan Law.

Pittston Area would get their second TD of the night late in the 3rd quarter when Jr. FB Steve Stoss took it in from the 1 yard line after a Berwick fumble was recovered.

Berwick head coach George Curry got a good look a his back-up QB tonight, that being Mike Walton. Walton was pleased to get the time under center, but his main objective is to play were he is needed.

"It felt good tonight to throw a few passes, wherever the team needs me that's were I go. I just go were coach tells me and try to play to the best of my ability", said Walton after the game.

Another Berwick player having a good game tonight was Dalen Broussard, who rushed for 47 yards on 9 carries with 1 TD.

"I was kind of nervous waiting to see what kind of reaction I would get coming back to PA, then I got my number called down in the redzone. It was nice to get that TD to start the game off, said Broussard. "I was talking to some of my old teamates before the game, it was all good."

Berwick will now host Selinsgrove next Friday night at Crispin Memorial Field. Selinsgrove will come in undefeated, after shutting out Milton 39-0.
