Wyoming Area @ Berwick
(Friday, September 16th, WK 3)

Wyoming Area, True Warriors

By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

The Wyoming Area Warriors traveled to Crispin Memorial Field Friday night to clash with the Berwick Bulldogs in a battle of unbeatens, both teams coming in at 2-0. The Dawgs would be the heavy favorite, tabbed by many to be state championship caliber this season. Wyoming Area was certainly expected to be a good test for Berwick, but an upset was unlikely. Well, that's why they play em! Wyoming Area 21 Berwick 7, shocker for many.

The Warriors would use a fierce pass rush to keep Berwick's offense out of sink most of the way. They keyed on Sr. RB Brant Quick and really closed the gaps at the line. You have to give this team credit, they prepared very well and things really seemed to be going their way much of the game. Good teams create their own destiny and Wyoming Area is a good team.

How good is Berwick? Good question, only time will tell, but tonight they really got out played on both sides of the ball. That doesn't happen in Berwick very often, but the Warriors do seem to have the Dawg's number of late. Off all the teams in the Wyoming Valley Conference, Wyoming Area always seems to play Berwick the toughest, with Valley West a close second.

The Warriors got off to a 7-0 lead with 5:19 left in the 1st half after a interception by Sr. Matt Rynkiewicz set up WA at the Berwick 16 yard line. From there WA would use 5 rushing plays to get on the board, capping the drive was Sr. RB Tyler Saville.

Wyoming Area would hold a 7-0 lead into the fourth quarter. Berwick would have their shots to strike paydirt along the way, but things were surely not going their way. At one point the Dawgs were on the goaline looking to put up 6 but fumbled it away, again it just wasn't meant to be on this night.

The Warriors would make it 14-0 with 10:16 left in the game on a 25 yard rushing TD by Sr. RB Pat Mackin. Wyoming Area was only minutes away from the season's first major upset, they could smell it for sure.

Berwick would recover a fumble on Wyoming Area's very next possession and Brant Quick would lead the way capping off a 5 play, 26 yard drive on a 3 yard TD scamper. Berwick was right back in it 14-7 with time winding down.

The Dawgs would get the ball back on their own 20 yard line with 3:12 left in the game. Berwick would manage to get a 1st down on a pass in the flat to Quick. From there it was 4 plays and out, with the WA "D" holding their ground. The Warriors would take over on downs at the Berwick 4 yard line after a sack by Sr. T.J. Holtz. Jr. QB Justin Piontkowski would take it in on a 4 yard keeper to salt it away, with the final score Warriors 21 Dawgs 7 in a stunner.

Having a huge game for WA on the defensive side of the ball was #95 Matt Rynkiewicz, he seemed to be giving the Berwick "O" line headaches most of the night.

"We prepared for this game all week long, our coaches really had a great game plan going into this one. This was an amazing game, said the senior Rynkiewicz.

Wyoming Area certainly did come in with a great game plan, head coach Paul Marrancca didn't seem to put much pressure on the team to win, but he definitely had them thinking they could.

"We love coming down here to play, its a great football atmosphere. All we were asking for is 100 percent out of our guys, we got 1000 percent out of them tonight", said Marrancca.
