By Brian Carson

LEWISTOWN-The Tyrone Golden Eagles clinched the top seed in the District 6 Class AA playoffs with a dominating 47-13 victory over Indian Valley on Friday.

Tyrone, the fourth ranked team in the state, rolled up 429 yards of total offense to up its record to 8-0 on the season. The Warriors, held to only 161 total yards, dropped to 2-6 on the year.

"We beat a fine program. I have so much respect for (Indian Valley coach) Gawen Stoker. He's got a young team and they're going to be really good in the future," said Tyrone head coach John Franco. "Our kids played really hard.really well.

"I thought our offensive line controlled the line of scrimmage and the whole tempo of the game. Our skill kids made some great plays and our defense was dominating. I thought we played well in just about every area tonight."

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 21-0 lead after one quarter, scoring on all three drives.

Brinton Mingle capped a 7-play, 44-yard drive with a TD run from seven yards out. Lester Stotler made the PAT for the 7-0 lead at the 7:05 mark.

After a Johnny Franco interception gave the ball to Tyrone at mid-field, Leonard Wilson ran a quarterback draw for 43 yards down to the IV 7. Two plays later, Mingle, who finished with 118 yards on 15 carries, bulled in from two yards out for the 14-0 advantage.

Trey Brockett recovered a Warrior fumble and the Golden Eagles would score again when Franco scampered in from the 16 for the TD with no time left on the clock.

The Golden Eagles would make it 33-7 with two more scores before the half. Wilson connected on a four-yard score to Tyler Gillmen at the 6:19 mark and Shane Barr snagged a 13-yard pass with 13 seconds left in the half.

Indian Valley would get avoid the shutout when Jordan Brought caught a 19-yard TD from Anthony Trutt with 1:56 on the clock.

"Tyrone football is hard-hitting, whether we're good, mediocre or poor. That's the one thing we will always do is hit hard," Franco stated. "Indian Valley made some good plays near the end of the first half, but we responded well in the second half."

The Golden Eagles took advantage of another IV fumble and Mingle made it 40-7 with his third touchdown of the game - this one coming from seven yards out.

Tyrone's final score of the evening came on a 4-play, 51-yard drive that ended with Marvin Williams blasting up the middle for the one-yard touchdown.

The Golden Eagles finished with 316 yards rushing. In addition to Mingle, Franco had 66 yards on six carries and Wilson, who was 8-of-10 passing for 113 yards, collected 48 yards on two attempts. Barr led the Tyrone receivers with four catches for 75 yards.

"This was a good performance tonight. I think we're solid in all areas," said Franco. "We aren't as talented as last year's squad, but we are stronger in some areas compared to last season.

"We don't have the star power that we've had in the past, but we're a much more balanced team. Offensively, we can run the ball inside and outside. Our quarterback can run and throw. Defensively, we're tough. We are tough inside, quick outside and our secondary is real good. So what we like in start quality - we make up for in our balance."
