BELLWOOD TAKES TO THE AIR IN WIN OVER P-O

By Brian Carson

BELLWOOD-Bellwood-Antis wide receiver Dan Kovac caught three touchdown passes to lead the Blue Devils to the 29-0 victory over Philipsburg-Osceola, in a rain-soaked contest on Friday.

The win lifts Bellwood to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Mountain Athletic Conference Nittany Division. The loss drops the Mounties to 1-5 on the year and 1-3 in the conference.

"We didn't execute when we had to and we gave up big plays that hurt us," said Philipsburg head coach Jeff Vroman. "And the problem is, it isn't just one guy it's everybody.

"The good thing is we kept plugging away and we're young. That's part of it, but you can only say you're young for so long. Someone has to step up and take charge."

Kovac, who caught six passes for 162 yards, had TD scores of 48, 33 and 20 yards, while quarterback Kyle Drost threw for 202 yards on 8-of-15 passing.

The Mounties dominated time of possession in the game, but self-destructed when they reached Blue Devil territory.

Philipsburg had a 9-play and 16-play drive that failed to produce points. The latter ended when Tony Delgrosso sacked QB A.J. Czap on a fourth-and-goal from the Bellwood 4.

"We had the ball for something like 39 offensive plays in the first half. It was ridiculous," exclaimed Vroman. "They didn't stop us, we stopped ourselves. We stopped ourselves every time with a dumb penalty. You've got to make plays."

For all intents and purposes, the wind was taken out of the Philipsburg sails after its drive stalled near the Bellwood goal line.

After Delgrosso's sack, the home team marched on an 8-play, 84-yard drive that ended with Kovac scoring on a 33-yard pass from Drost. The PAT would make it 22-0 at the half.

Josh Kleinfelter, who finished the game with 106 yards on 20 carries, sparked the drive with runs of 15 and 13 yards. Clapper had a 19-yard dash as well.

"We established some things and than we'd get some pressure and that killed us," said Vroman. "We contained their running game for the most part, but the mistakes we made in coverage and those mental lapses really hurt us. We have to execute better."

The Blue Devils got on the board with 4:45 left in the first quarter, when Kovac got behind the coverage on the post route and scored from 49-yards out. Brandon Eger ran it in for the two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.

After a quick Mountie punt, Bellwood-Antis would score 45 second later. Devon Clapper ran it in from the 17 and the PAT made it 15-0.

Bellwood put the icing on the cake with a 16-play, 62-yard drive that ended with Kovac snagging a 20-yard pass for the score on fourth-and-goal with 11:20 left in regulation.

The Mounties marched on another long drive in the fourth, this one a 17-play affair that stalled on the Blue Devil 9.

"We moved the ball well and that's good. The guys are working hard and they never give up, but we have to execute better and learn to finish these drives," Vroman said.

Ryan Marcinko led the Mountie offense with 90 yards on 16 carries. Philipsburg hosts Bald Eagle Area, while Bellwood-Antis travels to Chestnut Ridge on Friday.
