Bellefonte ground attack too much for IV

By Brian Carson

LEWISTOWN-Josh Gentzel ran for 224 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Bellefonte football team to the 41-12 Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Indian Valley on Friday.

The Red Raiders, now 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in the MAC Seven Mountains Division, picked up 406 yards on the ground to drop the Warriors to 2-3 on the year and 1-2 in conference play.

"We said all week that we were not going to go over there, like we did against Clearfield, and give them a quick start," said Bellefonte head coach Tom Gravish. "They can run the option better than anyone. I'm really proud of the way our defense played and the effort that our assistant coaches put into this game. They did an outstanding job tonight."

Bellefonte got on the boards with its first drive - a 4-play affair that saw Gentzel account for all 68 yards. The final play came on a

four-yard burst. The PAT made it 7-0 with 10:27 on the clock.

The Red Raiders made it 2-for-2 in scoring chances by marching down the field 77 yards in 10-plays for the touchdown. Nate Carson scored from eight yards out and Mike Putnam connected with Gentzel for the two-point conversion to make it 15-0.

In the second quarter, Bellefonte's Chris Snare returned an Indian Valley punt 56 yards down to the Warrior 2. Gentzel crossed the goal line on the next play to give the Red Raiders the 22-0 lead at the half.

Bellefonte thought they scored again on its next possession, but Carson's 66-yard punt return for a score was called back because of a holding call.

"Our offensive line did a great job staying on people and opening holes for Josh and the others to run through," replied Gravish. "We had some penalties that hurt and we couldn't get into the down and distance match-ups we wanted.

"We need to work on some things for next week and the week after. We have to try to be a little bit more balanced. We're going to have to do a little more than run the ball 80-85 percent of the time with some of the teams we'll play down the stretch."

The Warriors cut the lead to 22-6 to start the second half as IV tailback Jamie Thompson scored from 12 yards out at the 10:25 mark. A 21-yard run by Nam Shartzer and a 12-yard scamper by Anthony Trutt keyed the 5-play, 60-yard drive.

The Red Raiders broke the game open in the fourth quarter, adding three more touchdowns. The first was a 14-yard pass from Snare to Zach Robbins, which was followed by a 13-yard run from Gentzel and a 70-yard gallop down the right sideline by Brandyn Maddox.

Indian Valley's final points of the evening came on a 68-yard scoring pass from Trutt to Thompson with 10:47 to go in the contest.

Bellefonte out-gained the Warriors 456-231. Thompson led Indian Valley with 39-yards rushing. The senior also grabbed four passes for 101 yards. Trutt was 6-for-17 for 120 yards and a TD pass.

"Our defense did a great job. Their offense can get a big play and, except for one time, we stopped that tonight," said Gravish. "We're real pleased with where we are right now. We're taking it one game at a time. We're working on having tunnel vision.

"We're real proud of our senior leadership. We work these kids real hard and they never complain. That hard work is starting to show on the field."

Bellefonte travels to Tyrone and Indian Valley is on the road against Central Mountain on Friday.
