Running Game Leads Bearcats To Victory
By Brian Carson
LEWISTOWN-Bucky Culbertson rushed for 184 yards and two scores to lead Huntingdon to the 34-0 Mountain Athletic Conference win over Lewistown, Friday night at Mitchell Field.
The Bearcats improved to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in the Seven Mountains Division of the MAC. The Panthers fell to 2-2 on the year and 0-1 in league play.
"It was important for us to establish the run and we did that. It started coming around against Bellefonte last week and we improved on it in this game," said Huntingdon head coach Jim Zauzig.
The Bearcat defense had its bend don't break moments in the first half, stopping the Panthers short after drives of 14 and 12 plays gave Lewistown nothing but goose eggs to show for their efforts.
"Our defense has been bending a lot, but they're starting to come around," Zauzig remarked. "Your momentum is controlled by the defense and the offense feeds off of that. That's what we did tonight."
After a scoreless first quarter, Huntingdon struck gold when quarterback Kyle Kyper connected with Mike Jones on a deep post from 40 yards out. Mark Blumling's PAT made it 7-0 with 9:50 left in the first half.
The Bearcats made it 14-0 just before halftime, when Tim Rohrer bulled in from five yards out to cap a 6-play, 65-yard drive. Culbertson carried five times for 60 yards to spur the offensive series.
"For most of the first half we came out and played good football. The mistakes we made took us out of scoring opportunities," said Lewistown head coach Alan Muir. "We're working hard on the mental aspect, but just like life, not everything is going to go our way all the time.
"We have to come back and prepare for Clearfield. We're hustling and working hard. Things just didn't go our way tonight."
Huntingdon took their opening drive of the second half and marched 80 yards to make it 20-0 with 5:30 to go in the quarter. Rohrer plunged in from two yards out for his second TD. Kyper had runs of 25 and 31 yards to key the drive.
After a Lewistown punt and penalty gave the Bearcats the ball on the Panther 33, Culbertson recorded his first score of the night on a 33-yard gallop to paydirt. The PAT made it 27-0.
Huntingdon closed out the scoring with a Culbertson blast up the middle for three yards.
"The score doesn't indicate the kind of game it was. It was a chess match," said Zauzig. "Alan Muir is a good coach and he's doing good things at Lewistown.
"This league is very competitive. You can throw a hat over all six of us. There's a lot of balance. We're young and I think we're going to pick it up here in the second half of the season and do well."
The Bearcats out-gained the Panthers 339-162. Chris Tressler paced Lewistown with 73 yards on 16 attempts.
Huntingdon hosts Punxsutawney, while Lewistown travels to Clearfield on Friday.
