Late Drive Lifts Bison over Warriors
By Brian Carson
LEWISTOWN-If Clearfield football coach Tim Janocko didn't quite
grasp the meaning of the old cliché; 'snatching victory from defeat,' he
definitely understands it now.
The Bison, down 20-14 late in the fourth quarter - displayed the
character that has won them 19 consecutive regular season contests - by
stopping Indian Valley on a goal-line stand and then marching on a 12-play,
96-yard drive for a game-winning, 21-20 victory at a soggy Mitchell Field on
Friday.
The win improved Clearfield to 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in the
Mountain Athletic Conference's Seven Mountain's division, while the Warriors
fell to 1-2 and 0-1 in the conference.
"This was a heck of a game by both teams. Give Indian Valley a lot
credit. They played tough. The fans who stayed for this game got their money's
worth," said Janocko. "Our kids just refused to quit and that shows you the
character of this team. We had so many kids making big plays. Our guys kept
fighting and did a great job in that final drive."
With just over five minutes left in regulation, Indian Valley had a
first-and-goal at the 8. Three running plays put the Warriors on the 4-yard
line. Instead of going for the field goal, IV went for the fake, but the
pass fell incomplete with Clearfield taking over with 5:35 left.
Bison quarterback Andrew Janocko connected with Adam Jury and Curtis
Campman with 23-yard strikes to set up a first-and-10 at the 47 with 3:13 to
go.
Janocko hit Beau Ryan, who led Clearfield with nine catches for 119
yards, for 17 yards and Campman scampered for 11, to set up a shop on the IV
19 with 2:30 left in regulation. Shane Davis followed with a five-yard blast
up the middle; Campman scooted around the right end for nine yards to make
it first-and goal from the 5 with 1:04 to go.
Janocko capped off the drive from a yard out with 19 seconds left.
Lucas Feathers made the big extra point for the 21-20 victory.
Campman, subbing for the injured Lucas Aughenbaugh at tailback,
finished the game with 137 yards on 24 carries. The senior also had three
receptions for 91 yards. Janocko ended his night by going 16-for-24 for 264
yards.
"Curtis Campman made a big catch. Our quarterback made some mistakes
in this game, but give him credit, he came through in the clutch," stated
Janocko. "He engineered a big-time drive and there were so many big plays.
It was a total team effort."
The Bison jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a
five-yard run by Campman and a four-yard score by Davis.
Indian Valley cut the deficit to 14-7 when Nam Shartzer capped a
9-play, 79-yard drive, by going in from the 4. Warrior QB Anthony Trutt
threw a strike to Jordan Brought on the slant for 59 yards that put the ball
on the Clearfield 6.
The Warriors took the lead with two scores in the third quarter. One
on a four-yard run by Trutt and the other came on a Thad Rosenberry 60-yard
interception return with 6:44 left in the period.
Then the torrential rains came and coupled with some lightning,
caused a 45-minute delay.
Clearfield travels to Bellefonte in a key league match-up on Friday.
