ERIC AMENDOLA REPORT
TIGERS EDGE WILDCATS, 21 - 20 !!!
It had been three years since Fairview and Northwestern played a
football game against each other prior to their meeting Friday night at
Rogers Field. It may be many more years until they another game against
each other as exciting and physical as the one played Friday night. The
Tigers took their first lead of the game in the 4th quarter, then denied
the Widcats a two point conversion pass with 12 seconds to go to nip the
Wildcats 21 - 20 on a pefect night for football.
Cody Cipalla, Northwestern's do it all quarterback, scored from 50 yards
out on the Wildcats first play from scrimmage to give NW a 7 - 0 lead.
Tyler Sargent then took the ensuing kickoff 83 tards for a Tiger
touchdown, running untouched up the middle of the field. After another
Cipalla score in the second quarter, Gary Corbin hit Justin Haney with a
perfect 25 yard touchdown pass in stride as Haney made an over the
shoulder the catch down thw sideline. A scoreless 3rd quarter led to an
exciting finish. On a 4th and 4 from the NW 46, Fairview executed a
fake punt to perfection, with Justin Haney taking the short snap from
center and tossing a 36 yard pass to Matt Sundberg. Two plays later,
Corbin found tight end Jake Lightner alone in the end zone for the
Tiger's first lead of the night. The Wildcats came right back, thanks
to some nifty scrambling from Cipalla, who finished with 147 yards
rushing on 23 carries. Northwestern scored with just 12 seconds to go a
a 1 yard keeper from Cipalla. NW elected to go for the win, but
Cipalla's pass in the back of the end zone was just off the mark due to
outstanding Fairivew pass defense. A failed onside kick and kneel down
ended one of the most exciting high school games seen in many years, and
rekindled a rivalry that had been nonexistent since 2003.
Defensive stars were Marcus Paradise (NW) with 14 tackles, Pat Michael
(FV) 12 tackles, Tyler Sargent (FV) an interception and kickoff return
for a touchdown. The Tigers will open the home portion of the schedule
next week at Keck Field against Seneca on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
