Frank Dimon's District 4 Report - Week TWO

If Danville's opening week upset of Selinsgrove sent ripples across the state, Bloomsburg sent a Week Two tidal wave throughout Pennsylvania with a 19-0 shutout of Southern Columbia, the five-time defending Class A state champions.
Powered by quarterback Tyler Coombe, a 6-0, 235 senior who moonlights as a defensive end, the Panthers took early control of the Central Susquehanna Conference Division-II race and handed the Tigers their first loss in 27 games. The victory was Bloomsburg's first over Southern in 23 years.
Coombe, who missed the last 8:57 of the game because of cramps, completed 13-of-25 passes for 129 yards (all in the first half) and two touchdowns. Coombe hit Mike Tombasco with a 25-yard first quarter score and the pair added 10-yard scoring pass in the second quarter that game the Panthers a 13-0 halftime lead.
Kicker Jared Shannon booted second half field goals of 30 and 38 yards.
While Coombe and Tombasco led the attack, the Bloomsburg defense stymied Southern's offense, holding the Tigers to 42 yards rushing. The Bloom defense preserved the shutout by holding Southern on seven plays inside the five late in the game.
In a key non-league matchup, Montoursville improved to 2-0 with a 14-9 win over Shamokin. Quarterback Chad Jacobson hit Keenan Michael twice for touchdowns and running back Mike Steele carried the ball 110 yards on 16 carries.
Selinsgrove bounced back from its unexpected loss to Danville by blanking Jersey Shore, 14-0. Eric Deckard threw a pair of touchdown passes and the Seals defense limited Shore to 82 total yards.
Danville improved to 2-0 as Andrew Shoop hit 15-of-22 passes for 185 yards and four scores. Tight end Michael Smith caught eight passes and had each of Shoop's touchdown lobs.
Warrior Run remained unbeaten with a 43-0 blowout of Milton. Bryson Brooke threw for 179 yards and two scores while Quiad Richart ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns. The Defenders defense limited Milton to 65 yards.
Mount Carmel got 128 yards rushing and two touchdowns from James Haynes but Lancaster Catholic, powered by the passing of Kyle Smith, upended the Red Tonadoes, 31-20.
Mifflinburg overcame 105 yards of penalties with a 372-yard rushing attack to turn back Lewisburg, 34-24. Darren Reynolds ran for 161 yards and three scores and Chris Porter added 96 yards rushing. Lewisburg quarterback Devin Cassel threw for 148 yards and three touchdowns.
Line Mountain moved to 2-0 with a tough 20-17 victory over District 3 opponent Halifax. Quarterback Clark Morris ran for 113 yards and a TD and threw for 141 yards and a pair of scores.
Hughesville remained unbeaten with a 35-28 triumph over Central Columbia thanks to a late 2-yard scring run by Taylor Falk. Ammon Swisher powered for 194 yards on 25 carries for the Spartans. Central's Andrew Diltz threw for 201 yards for the Blue Jays.
Loyalsock pounded South Williamsport, 56-8, by rushing for 481 yards. Quarterback Shane Carey also threw for three touchdowns.
Sayre's Andy Podolinski returned the opening kickoff for an 85-yard touchdown and the Redskins led Troy, 19-18, at halftime but the Trojans cameback for a 42-19 win.
Athens sophomore Garrett Russell, subbing for the injured Garrett Morgan, ran for 184 yards and four touchdowns as the Wildcats pounded Cowanesque Valley, 36-6.
Lourdes used a game-opening 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Chris Johnson and two touchdown passes by Brian Dunleavy to top York Vo-Tech 22-14. Dunleavy had 204 yards through the air.
