Steven's wrestling defeats Valley Forge and Rowan University

        The Thaddeus Steven's wrestling team remains undefeated at the Junior college level and improves their over-all record to 7-2, defeating Rowan University 40-12, and Valley Forge 39-12.  The dogs howled as every wrestler who stepped on the mat earned a victory.  The only points the Steven's squad gave up, were due to forfeits.  The Stevens team will be competing again on Saturday at 10:00 Am in the Sunny Morrisville Mustang Classic in New York.  Here is the mat wrap up, weight by weight.

        At 125 pounds returning national qualifier Mike Gardner scored 28 points on offense before pinning both of his opponents.  The sophomore pinned Eric English in 3:30 and Steve Ferraro in 4:24!

        At 149pounds L.J. Ladley earned two victories defeating Bob Kibler of Rowan 21-9, and in one of the most exciting matches of the evening, L.J. defeated Corey Holmes of Valley Forge 12-10 in overtime with only 3 seconds left on the clock!  The Octarara graduate rallied and scored 6 points in the third period to take the match into overtime.  Eventually taking one final shot with 15 seconds left on the clock, before scoring the winning takedown!

        At 157 pounds Jeremiah Longenecker of Manheim Central earned another victory defeating Devin Poramky of Valley Forge, Jeremiah also collected a forfeit against Rowan University.

        At 174 pounds Penn Manor stand out Brandon Kauffman had the fastest pin of the night, decking Adam Wahling of Valley Forge in only 20 seconds!  Brandon also defeated Tim Sorrentino of Rowan 12-4 earning the bulldogs another major decision.

        At 184 pounds Billy Spangler earned two victories one by fall over Joe Sommers of Valley Forge in a time of 2 minutes, Billy also collected a forfeit against Rowan at 197 pounds.

        Dave Finger competed at both 184 pounds and 197 pounds pinning Keith Goren of Rowan University in a time of 4 minutes and 51 seconds.  Dave then made short work of Valley Forges 197 ponder defeating Dan Seluka with a first period fall in a time of 2 minutes and thirteen seconds!

        At heavyweight Matt Burkholder of Ephrata was awarded two victories, both by forfeit over r the visiting schools.

2002 Messiah Tournament
Saturday November 9th!
        The Thaddeus Steven's wrestling team finished fourth this weekend in the Messiah Invitational wrestling tournament.  The team was led by captains Dave Finger and Mike Gardner, who both finished 1st in their weight classes.  Dave is a sophomore originally from Pequa Valley High School wrestling at 184 pounds.  Dave defeated Jared Allred form Ursinus by a score of 6-3, and then defeated Mike Mergot of Ursinus 9-3, and in the finals Dave defeated Tim Pentz of Messiah 10-6. 

Mike Gardner originally of Bellefonte entered the tournament seeded third at 125 pounds, and left as the champion.  On his way to victory, Mike pinned Dominic Spavanta of Ursinus in 3:33, he then pinned J.R. Fidler of Waynesburg in 5:03.  Mike then had to wrestle Jacob Clackett of Messiah who defeated Mike last year, this time Mike defeated Clackett 10-6.  In the finals Mike defeated a returning division III All-American Mitch Marks of King's college 6-4. 

        AT 125 pounds, Bradley Beal of Connellsville also won three matches, two by fall. 
At 133 Jamie Chambers of Shippensburg opened his wrestling career winning three matches, two by fall, and placing fourth.

        At 141 pounds local star LJ Ladley of Octorara won three matches, placing third in his weight class.  LJ's only loss came from top seed Tim Amrtinez of King's college.

        AT 157 pounds Seth Thomas picked up a win decking Jeremy Gatens of E-town in 1:57.
At 165 pounds Penn Manor standout Brandon Kauffman wrestled his way to a third place finish, picking up three wins.  In the consolation final, Brandon was losing with less than a minute to go, before he threw Zach Snyder of Messiah to his back for the fall in a time of 5:11. 

        In the heavy weight division, Fred Heim picked up two wins on his way to a third place finish.  Fred originally lost to Nick Weber of Ursinus however, in the consolation final Fred turned the tide defeating Nick in double over-time 3-1!  Great job guys!

Steven's College 19, Albright 12
Saturday January 11th 2003

        The Thaddeus Steven's wrestling program improved their record to 4 and O, defeating Albright 19-12 on Saturday, January 11th in Reading.  This is the team's first competition since returning from the semester break. 

        The team was lead by Penn Manor graduate and state medallist Brandon Kauffman who recorded a first period fall over Tyriq Edwarss in 2 minutes and 15 seconds at 174 pounds. 

        Returning national Qualifier Mike Gardner of Bellefonte high school had one of the most exciting matches of the day defeating Wade Ginter 9-7 in overtime.  Mike was leading with 30 seconds left 7-5 when Wade reversed him to send the match into overtime.  After a ferocious flurry, Mike was awarded the takedown with 25 seconds left in the overtime period.

        Co-Captain and returning national qualifier Dave Finger of Pequa Valley has moved one-step closer in preparing for nationals, as he defeated Sean Sullivan 10-2 earning a major decision for the visiting bulldogs. 

        Andy Reitterer improved his record as he earned another victory for the team at 141 pounds.

Steven's College outwrestles Elizabethtown College 35 to 18
Dec. 6th 2002

        The Thaddeus Steven's bulldogs defeated the Elizabethtown Blue Jays by a score of 35 to 18.  The Dogs won 6 of the ten matches, led by Jeremiah Longenecker of Manheim Central at 149 pounds who pinned Eric Boyle in 1 minute and 53 seconds, along with and Brandon Kauffman of Penn Manor at 174 pounds who pinned Eric Guise in only 56 seconds. 

        The most exciting match of the evening occurred at 125 pounds where returning national qualifier Mike Gardner of Bellefonte High School had to overcome a 8-2 deficit at the end of the first period.  Mike earned an escape and two takedowns in the second period, making the score 7-9.  With 35 ticks on the clock Mike left Boyle up making the score 10-9.  Mike stayed on the offense and Boyle got hit for stalling with 17 seconds left, tying the score, with ten seconds left Mike shot and scored making the score 12 -11.  Mike also had 1 minute and 33 seconds of riding time making the final score 13-11.

        Fred Heim of Tri-Valley scored a major decision over Mike Mayberry by a score of 14-3.  Andy Reittener of Kennard Dale debuted in his first college match, earning a major decision over Joe Sahd by a score of 18-9.

Other wrestlers for the bulldogs who earned victories included returning national qualifier Dave Finger of Pequa Valley at 184 pounds and Matt Burkholder of Ephrata at 197 pounds.

Steven's College Defeats Gloucester College 28-27
December 14th 2002

Steven's College defeated the returning Division III Junior College National Champions 28-27 on Saturday afternoon in their first home match of the year.  The Bulldogs improve their record to 3-0, the best start the dogs have had in over a decade! 

The bulldogs were lead by returning National Qualifier and Captain David Finger who recorded a major decision over Mike Marchevsky at 184 pounds.  Dave scored two takedowns in the first period, then escaped and scored another takedown in the second period.  At the start of the third period Dave reversed his opponent and was awarded a penalty point for unsportsman like conduct making the score 9-2.  The returning national qualifier had gained 4 minutes of riding time thus earning him one more point and securing the major decision.  This point was crucial in securing the victory for the squad. 

Other individuals who gained points for the team included returning National Qualifier Mike Gardner at 125 pounds, Andy Reitterer at 141 pounds, Jeremiah Longenecker at 149 pounds, and Brandon Kauffman at 165 pounds.

The Steven's team is now off for the holidays and will start back on the trail to nationals on Saturday January 11th at 1:00Pm at Albright College.

Steven's College places 6th at King's College Tournament
Saturday November 16th 2002

        The Thaddeus Steven's wrestling team was led by freshman Matt Burkholder of Ephrata who placed first in the 197-pound weight class this weekend!  This is the first tournament Matt has won on the college level.  Matt started out majoring Pat Reif of Morrisville 10-0, followed by a technical fall over Daniel Montgomery of Johnson and Wales.  In the finals Matt drew a fifth year senior from King's college.  Matt was down 4-2 going into the third period giving up two takedowns to the senior and earning two escapes.  Matt escaped early and pursued the Monarch earning both a stall call and a penalty point as the King's college wrestler tried to stay out of reach.  At the end of the match the score was tied 4-4, time for a one-minute sudden victory period.  Despite several attacks the score remained 4-4 at the end of the minute. A 30 second ride out was called; Reif earned the first offensive point and therefore was given choice of position.  Reif chose defense, Matt had to maintain control for thirty seconds to win.  The King's college wrestler made his way out of bounds, with 15 ticks left on the clock.  Matt returned to the center and rode the King's college wrestler the last 15 seconds, winning the match!  Awesome job Matt.

        At 125 pounds Mike Gardner placed second, losing to returning All-American Mitch Marks of Kings College by a score of 3-2.  Mike had beaten Mitch last week in the finals 6-4 at Messiah.  This match puts an end to the battles with Gardner winning two matches over Mitch by a score of 9-3 last year and 6-4 this year.  On his way to the finals Mike defeated Bradley Beal of Steven's College, then Josh Cuomo of Sunny Oneonta, in the semi-finals Eric Boyle of E-town defaulted to Mike, which set up the show down in the finals.  Nice job Mike. 

        At 184 pounds Dave finger earned a third place finish.  Dave started out pinning Jamie Pradera of Waynesburg College, then suffered his first loss of the year to eventual champion Ryan Lenhardt of Johnson and Wales, Dave then wrestled Jared Allred of Ursinus college winning 4-0, and in the consolation finals Dave defeated Gavin Luckman of York College by fall in a time of 2:26.  Outstanding!

Steven's College wins two gold medals at 2002 Kutztown Tournament

        The Steven's College bulldogs were lead to an eighth place finish by returning national qualifier Mike Gardner of Bellefonte and true freshman Brandon Kauffman of Penn Manor.  Mike placed first at a 125 pounds, as did Brandon at 174 pounds. 

        Mike defeated Darnell Moore from Montclair State 10-2 and Robbie Getz of Shippensburg 9-2 on his way to the top of the medal platform.   This is the second tournament of the year in which Mike has claimed gold, and the third tournament in which he appeared in the finals. 

        Brandon Kaufman who placed sixth in PIAA states last year, claimed his first gold medal of the year at Kutztown.  Brandon defeated Adam Baeira of Montclair State 1-0 in his first bout.  Adam proved to be the only wrestler to go the distance with Brandon as he pinned his way through the rest of the tournament.  Brandon's next opponent was Brian Bartlet of Bridge Water State, this match only lasted a minute and twenty -four seconds.  In the finals Brandon pinned Nick Brumbaugh of Kutztown in a time of three minutes and fifty-four seconds thus earning Brandon the gold medal. 

        Mike Reeser who placed sixth in his first college tournament also helped put points on the board for the Steven's squad. 

        Other wrestlers who earned wins for the Steven's team are Jeremiah Longenecker at 149 pounds, Billy Spangler at 174 pounds, Matt Burkholder at 197 pounds and Fred Heim at heavyweight.

     The Bulldogs next competition is at Elizabethtown College on Friday December 6th at 8:00 PM.  Good luck guys.

Steven's College at Middlesex Invitational
Sunday December 8th 2002

        The Steven's College wrestling team was lead to a third place finish by returning National Qualifier Dave Finger at 184 pounds and Freshman Brandon Kauffman at 174 pounds who both finished first at the Middlesex Community College Tournament.

Dave beat Dustin Craighton of the University of Delaware 6-4, then he defeated Derrick Davis of Williamson Trade with a fall in 5:49 and in the finals Dave defeated Mike McConnel of Lafayette College 9-6.

Brandon Kauffman pinned John Eddy of North Hampton Community College in a time of 1:50, he then defeated Ryan Smith of the University of Delaware 7-6, in the finals Brandon defeated Yohan Banfield of Williamson Trade by a score of 7-3.

At 197 pounds Matt Burkholder placed third along with Fred Heim at Heavy Weight.  Matt decked Jeff Carhart of Yeshiva University in 1:24, in the wrestle backs, Matt defeated Dan Reed of Army Prep 4-0, in the consolation finals Matt pinned Corey Engelbrake of Williamson Trade in 2:49.

Fred Heim decked Jackson Duncan of Valley Forge in 3:42. In the wrestle backs Fred decked John Maruskanic of North Hampton Community College in 3:10, in the consolation finals Fred defeated Jackson Duncan of Valley Forge 3-1.

Other wrestlers who won matches included Andy Reitterrer of Kennard Dale with 3 falls, pinning Carlos Merenos of Middlesex, Ray Walter of Valley Forge and Adam Ewoldsen of Army Prep.

Stevens College28, North Hampton College 18
Wednesday January 15th

        The Thaddeus Stevens wrestling team improved their dual meet record to 5 and 0 on Wednesday night defeating North Hampton College by a score of 28-18.  The team was lead by Jeremiah Longenecker of Manheim Central and Billy Spangler of York County Vo-tech, as both wrestlers recorded falls in the meet Wednesday night against North Hampton College.  Jeremiah, wrestling at 149 pounds defeated Derrick Marinaro with a deep half in the second period, in a time of 4 minutes and 38 seconds.

        At 174 pounds, Billy Spangler outwrestled John Eddy to a score of 13-11 before securing the fall in the third period in a time of 5 minutes and 16 seconds.  This fall may have been the biggest win of the night, as Billy lost to John by fall in the first half of the year at the Middlesex tournament. 

        Returning national qualifier Mike Gardner of Bellefonte high school continues to roll on towards the big show in Rochester Minnesota, as he pinned Kenny Rayes in the 125 pound weight class in the first period in a time of 2:36.  Mike built a 6 to 2 lead before securing the fall. 

        State Medallist and local graduate Brandon Kauffman of Penn Manor wrestling at 174 pounds was selected as the first bout of the evening.  Brandon secured the only major decision of the evening defeating Steve Ward by a score of 11-3.  The 8 point difference picked up an extra team point for the bulldogs making the score 4-0.

Captain and returning national qualifier Dave Finger of Pequa Valley weighed in at 184 pounds, and moved up a weight class for the team and secured the win, defeating Jesse Probus 7-2. 

At 285 pounds, Matt Burkholder also scored points for the bulldogs, defeating Bradon Bingler by a score of 11-5.  Matt had the North Hampton Spartan on his back, in the third period and narrowly missed the fall.  Conditioning and strength training helped Burkholder secure the match as he scored six points in the third period to secure the victory.

The referee for the evening was Garry Kessel!

        Steven's College Vs. Williamson Trade
Tuesday Nov. 19th 2002

        Congratulations to the Steven's Bulldogs who defeated Williamson Trade Tuesday night by a score of 28-16.  Freshman Bradley Beal of Connellsville led the way with a fall 5 minutes and 33 seconds into the match at a 133 pounds over Carmen Calderon.  Two other freshman picked up huge victories, Fred Heim of Tri-Valley at heavyweight defeated Jeff Carhart by a score of 11-10, and local graduate Mark Burkholder of Ephrata earned a major decision defeating Ben Robinson 12-0.  David Finger earned another win over rival Derrick Davis by a score of 5-3.  Other wrestlers who earned points for the bulldogs are Mike Gardner of Bellefonte and Jeremiah Longenecker of Manheim Central.  Great job guys!
