ROCK WRESTLING ANNOUNCES RECRUITING CLASS
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University wrestling coach Jim Harshaw recently announced the addition of 24 new recruits to his program.
The list includes eight PA wrestlers who earned places in state high school competitions and four others who competed in a state tournament.
Headlining The Rock’s 2003-04 recruiting class is a trio of former high school state finalists who have committed to SRU.
Chad Sichak, who won a state championship for Richland High School (Johnstown, Pa.), has transfered to SRU from Old Dominion, where he had a 9-13 record last winter.
Chris Lape, a state runner-up at West Allegheny (Pa.) High School in 2001, has transferred to SRU from Bloomsburg after serving with the National Guard since being called up after September 11. Chris trained at the Olympic Training Center while stationed in Colorado.
Brent Beckstein, a state runner-up at Greenville (Pa.) High School in 2000is attending SRU after compiling a 21-24 record in two seasons at Pitt-Johnstown. He had a 1-2 record last winter after going 20-22 and coming within one match of earning NCAA Division II All-America honors in 2001-02.
Also included in The Rock’s recruiting class are five Pennsylvania state tournament place winners: Cory Mancuso of Brockway (fifth place in state tournament), Tyler Gilson of Juniata High School (sixth), Mike Hills of Reynolds High School (seventh), Ben Young of Downingtown (seventh) and Mike Lauff of Fort Cherry High School (eighth in 2002).
In addition, new Rock recruits Cory Leggett (Williamsport HS) placed third in the Maryland state competition, Daniel Scott (James River HS) finished fourth in the Virginia state tournament and Ian Kessler (New Fairfield HS) finished second in Connecticut state tournament.
Rock recruits Shawn Adams (Union City HS), Charlie Pienaar (Penn Trafford HS) and Garry Price (Juniata HS) all earned berths to the Pennsylvania high school state tournament, while Steve Britton (Geneva HS) competed in the Ohio state tournament.
