Six new members of the District 4 Wrestling Hall of Fame will be
inducted before the finals of the Class AA tournament at Williamsport
Saturday night.
Tom Quinn (Shamokin), Dennis Erdman (Line Mountain), Jay McGinley
(Southern Columbia), Aaron Fitt (Danville), Brett Snyder (Montoursville),
and Pat Kelly (Athens) comprise the class of 2009.
Quinn won thee District 4 championships and a Northeast regional title.
The owner of a 51-3 record, Quinn won the state championship at 120 pounds
in 1955.
Erdman coached at Line Mountain for 18 years, including 13 as the junior
high coach and five as the head coach of the varsity team. His teams won
five Tri-Valley championships, five Southern sectional crowns, four District
4 championships, and three Northeast regional titles. At the state
tournament, Erdman had a third place finish and in 1990 his team won the
championship. Erdman coached 14 state placewinners and he was named named
Tri-Valley coach of the year twice, District 4 coach of the year three
times, Northeast regional coach of the year twice, and PIAA coach of the
year in 1990.
McGinley coached at Southern Columbia for 33 years, including 17 years
as the head coach. His teams won five Mid Penn championships, two Columbia
County titles, and in 1984 his team was PIAA co-champions. McGinley coached
11 state placewinners, was named Mid Penn coach of the year five times,
District 4 coach of the year twice, and PIAA coach of the year in 1984.
Aaron Fitt wrestled at Danville but earned his greatest success at
Lycoming College. Fitt won two MAC championships and was named the league's
Outstanding Wrestler both years. Fitt won the Eastern Regional
championships, was a Dvision III All-American in 1996, and won an NCAA
championship as well as the Outstanding Wrestler award in 1997.
Wrestling at Montoursville, Snyder was a two-time sectional champion, a
two-time District 4 champion, and two-time Northeast regional champion. In
1979, Brett followed in his brother Rick's footsteps by winning the PIAA
145-pound championship. Snyder finished with a career record of 72-9,
including a perfect 31-0 his senior season.
Wrestling at Athens, Kelly had a spectacular senior season winning a
North sectional crown, a District 4 championship, a Northeast regional
title, and the PIAA championship at 145 pounds. He owned a 69-7-2 career
mark, including 31-1 as a senior. Kelly later coach at Troy from 1986 to
1994 and his team won a Northern Tier League championship in 1993.
