25TH ANNUAL APPRENTICE SCHOOL INVITATIONAL

 

Three Builders win weight classes to lead second place finish

 

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Apprentice School finished second on Saturday in the

25th annual Apprentice School Invitational scoring 72.5 points and having

three wrestlers win individual championships.  UNC Pembroke won the

tournament scoring 97 points and having four individual champions.

 

The three champions for the Builders were the most for the Apprentice School

since 1999 when they also won three titles.

 

Freshman Jon Glavin took first at 133 pounds winning a three-man round

robin.  He scored a major decision victory over Matt Schoffner of UNC

Pembroke 12-4 and scored a technical fall 16-0 win over Corey Holcombe of

Newberry College.

 

His brother Brad won at 141 pounds and started his march to a title with an

injury default victory.  In the semifinals he decisioned third-seeded Nick

Demianovich from University of Maryland-Baltimore County 3-1.  For the title

he decisioned Newberry College's Tony Washington 2-0.

 

Junior Reuben Russell won his first individual title scoring three wins at

157 pounds.  He started with a 12-6 decision over Raymond Wright of UNC

Pembroke before scoring a 14-4 major decision over Anthony Boniello of

Washington & Lee.  For the title he knocked off top-seeded Mike Hornzell of

UMBC 11-8.

 

Two other Builders took second place finishes in Josh Flint (125 pounds) and

Eric Lybarger (174).  Cecil Lee took third place at heavyweight to round out

the top place winners.

 

Derick Brunson of UNC Pembroke was named the Outstanding Wrestler award. His

teammate Bruce Dulski won the Champion of Champions award that was voted on

by all the individual champions.  Michael Clifford of Southern Virginia

University won the Most Pins award recording three in 4:38.

 

Next weekend the Builders will travel to Newberry, S.C. to participate in a

quad-match at Newberry College with Georgia Tech University and Catawba

College.
